Nonlinear Systems and Chaos

Chaos means inherent unpredictability in the behaviour of a (deterministic) nonlinear system (as the atmosphere, boiling water, or the beating heart). Small differences in initial conditions could yield widely diverging outcomes for chaotic dynamical systems, rendering long-term prediction impossible in general. In the course methods and tools of nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory will be applied to understand chaotic (yet deterministic) behaviours in physical, biological, social, economic and technological systems as well as to address questions in human behaviour and social interactions. The participants of this module will achieve understanding of the systems dynamical behaviour including systems that are relevant for modelling economy, behaviour science and operational science.
